Learning targets

Students can identify parts of a wave.

Students can calculate wave speed

This picture shows the charcteristics of a wave and says what they are. It also says which direction the waves moving in.

Vocabulary

Crest- High points of a transverse wave

Trough- Are lowpoints of a transverse wave

Amplitude- Is a measure of the size of a disturbance from a wave

Wavelength-Is the distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it

Period- Is the amount of time it takes one wavelength to pass a point

Frequency- The number of wave lengths that pass a fixed point each second

Doppler effect-Is the change in frequency of a wave (or other periodic event) for an observer moving relative to its source.

This video explains what the charcteristics are and where they are. Also it shows on the wave how they come into play.

Questions

Provide an example of the Doppler effect and explain how the example demonstrates the Doppler effect - The sound of a train whistle. When a train is sitting in a station prior to leaving, it blows its whistle, but listeners standing nearby notice nothing unusual. There is no difference—except perhaps in degree of intensity—between the sound heard by someone on the platform, and the sound of the train as heard by someone standing behind the caboose. This is because a stationary train is at the center of the sound waves it produces, which radiate in concentric circles (like a bulls-eye) around it.

How is the speed of a mechanical wave affected by the medium it travels through - Becasue differnet states of matter have different amount of particles.

How is the speed of an electromagnetic wave affected by the medium it travels through - Because different states of matte have different amount of particles.

What is the formula for calculating wave speed? What are the units? Provide an example problem and solve it - equation is speed=wavelength/period or speed=distance/time.The unit is Hertz or Hz. What is the speed of the wave? The distance was 2.5mm and time is 4.5 seconds. The answer is 0.5555555556 Hz.

A wave traveling in water has a frequency of 250 Hz and a wavelength of 6.0 m. What is the speed of the wave - The answer is 0.024 Hz.
